Perth's flagship "The Lip Lab" Store had it's first day of trade on Thursday and I one of the lucky ones with an appointment on the opening day. Like many other makeup artists and enthusiasts here in Perth, the news that the popular New South Wales based company created a lot excitement as it filled a niche in the cosmetic industry here in Perth.
For those of you who are unsure about what this company does (shoutout to the women who thought I was getting botox when I mentioned going to "The Lip Lab") it is a store that allows you to book an appointment in order to make your own lipstick and customise everything about it down to the shade, finish and scent of the lipstick. It then gets packaged up for you to take home ready to wear, complete with your own name for it. You can also add additives such as SPF or lip plumping agents to customise the lipstick to suit your preferences.
For those of you who prefer wearing vegan makeup they also cater to you with a vegan base for the lipstick and those of you who aren't lipstick lovers they can also create lip liners and glosses to suit your preferences.
The Fremantle franchise of The Lip Lab was opened by Perth mum Tanya and her partner Matt who were both so lovely and welcoming to all that walked in the doors on Opening day. My appointment was booked in with Dakota who helped me to create two customised lipstick shades a nude colour for everyday wear and a darker more vampy berry colour for a bold lip.
The process of creating these lipsticks was fascinating to watch and I was included in every step of the process in order to create a lipstick (or two) that I was 100% happy with. Firstly we discussed what kind of colour I was looking to create and then Dakota started by mixing together dots of liquid colour pigments and even some powdered colour pigment. Once she was satisfied with the colour she mixed in the lipstick base I had chose and allowed to me try on the colour. After altering this formula to suit my preferences she doubled the formula to make a substantial amount of lipstick. This formula is then melted in the microwave, mixed in a customised machine and placed into a lipstick mould before being packaged in the casing to be used like all your other lipsticks. This process took roughly 30 minutes per lipstick.
Although not overly creative, my lipstick choices were made to match my skin tone and were created specifically for my preferences; something you are just unable to do when you are shopping in an ordinary retailer. The nude lipstick I created was the perfect mid shade between a pink and a brown colour and was finished with a matte base to increase it longevity and suit my preferences. As you can see in the image (Above Left) the nude lipstick was made up of mainly yellow and brown pigments with a little bit of pink liquid pigments and a rose gold powdered pigment. I named this lipstick "Or Rose" after the french name of Rose Gold to match the powdered pigment we used in the lipstick. I also finished this lipstick off with a Pink Champagne scent to compliment the freshness of the nude shade.
For my second lipstick I wanted to create a vampy lip colour that had more of a purple undertone than the usual maroon-red undertones. This lipstick was made using mainly red, purple and pink pigments. Even though it appears to be a quite dark colour, the pay off is a lot more berry toned when applied to the lips. I kept with the same french theme for the name of this lipstick and called it "Baie" after the french word for berry. To complete this shade I also added a scent of Vanilla Latte (Vanilla and Cappuccino scents combined) to the lipstick to give it a rich smell to match the colour and it was finished off using a matte base.
For those of you who think this would be something you would enjoy doing, give Tanya, Matt and their team a visit- You will not be disappointed! They also accomodate group bookings and host events at the Lip Lab Fremantle so it is great if you want to get your girlfriends together and all create your perfect lipstick shades.
